WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

What’s Your Relationship With the Holy Spirit?

What is your relationship with the third person of the Trinity? I’m speaking of the Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, The Comforter, etc. Often I think since we view Him as the “third” person of the Trinity we rate Him less than God the Father or Jesus Christ God’s Son when it comes to Godhood. We often pray to the Father and worship Jesus who died for our sins, but we forget whom the Holy Spirit is and how important He is to our lives as children of God. Possibly we need a reminder of His qualifications as part of the triune Godhead we believe in as Christians?

First, we must understand that while the concept or doctrine of the Trinity is not mentioned specifically in scripture, it is a theological concept that is supported by scripture. This doctrine comes from scriptures that speak of God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit as all possessing characteristics of God. I won’t go into a detailed discussion of the Trinity here. That’s a whole topic in itself. We do need to understand that all persons of the Trinity are the God we worship.

The source of eternal life comes from each of them: God the Father (Romans 6:23), Jesus (John 10:28) and the Holy Spirit (Galatians 6:8).

We are the temple of each of them: God the Father (I Corinthians 6:17), Jesus (Ephesians 3:14:-17), and the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 3:16).

Christ was resurrected by each of them: God the Father (Acts 3:26,17:31), Jesus (John 2:19-21), and the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11).

Divine titles are given to each of them: God the Father (Genesis 17:1), Jesus (John 20:28,Acts 3:15), and the Holy Spirit (John 15:26).

Each are omnipotent (all-powerful): God the Father (Jeremiah 32:17), Jesus (Revelation 1:8,Matthew 28:18), and the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35).

Each is omnipresent (all-present): God the Father (Jeremiah 23:24), Jesus (Ephesians 1:21), the Holy Spirit (Psalms 139:7-10).

All are omniscient (all-knowing): God the Father (Acts 15:18), Jesus (John 21:17), the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 2:10-11).

Each is true: God the Father (John 7:28), Jesus (John 1:14), and the Holy Spirit (I John 5:6,John 16:13).

Each participated in creation: God the Father (Nehemiah 9:6), Jesus (Colossians 1:16), the Holy Spirit (Job 26:13).

The above scripture references are evidence that scripture supports the doctrine of the Trinity. These scriptures also show us that any worship, honor and praise we give to the God the Father or Jesus Christ, should also be given to the Holy Spirit. We must take seriously how much we love, respect, obey and worship the Holy Spirit. We, myself included, have a tendency to speak of the Holy Spirit as a force, power, an “it.” But scripture implies that the Holy Spirit has a personality just like the Father and the Son. Acts 5:1-4 speaks of the consequences of people who lie to the Holy Spirit. Can you lie to a force or power? Acts 13:2 speaks about the Holy Spirit giving instructions. Can an “it” give instructions?

Christians are possessed by God’s Spirit. We have dwelling in each of us, a person of the Holy Trinity. This personality convicts us, comforts us and seeks to draw us closer to a relationship with our living God, which includes the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

I hope you seek to praise, worship, love, and obey and respect all three persons of our Godhead, the Holy Trinity. Each person of the Trinity has a specific ministry to us. If we neglect the person of the Holy Spirit, we miss out on the blessings He wishes to bestow on us. Let us all seek to know Him better.
